Stewartia pseudocamellia BushOrigin: Japan, Korea. Medium sized deciduous tree or large shrub with conical-spreading crown. Greyish-brown bark which flakes off in patches. Leaves from oval to obovate, up to 9 cm long, deep green, in autumn yellow or violet-red. Flowers: in July-August, white with lots of yellow stamens in the centre followed by fruit in 2cm woody capsules. Requires quite moist soil but not marshy, preferably peaty.
