Stachys byzantina - Stachys Lanata
Stachys lanata or Stachys byzantina is a perennial groundcover herb no taller than 15 cm ideal for dry soils, without irrigation and not too fertile, otherwise it loses its characteristic color and is decidedly less long-lived because it is more susceptible to various types of rot. The plant grows into a charming groundcover no taller than 15 cm. In summer, small pink-violet flowers appear that attract butterflies because they are very rich in nectar. It has strong allelopathic ability, inhibiting the growth of surrounding weeds. Dry leaves must be removed periodically to prevent them from rotting and spreading fungal diseases, and preventive treatments against fungal diseases can be done towards the end of winter. Pruning is done in November by cutting all stems at ground level. This is an important operation to protect the plant from winter cold and to stimulate the growth of new shoots the following spring.
