Robinia pseudoacacia StandardOrigin: east United States. This is one of the first trees of North American origin to arrive in Europe and is almost certainly the most popular. The trunk is upright, covered in a grey, knobbly bark with deep furrows and topped with an open, spreading crown. Leaves: imparipinnate, up to 30 cm long, made up of 9-19 elliptic leaflets 3-4 cm long, bright green and bluish on the underside. The leaves appear late and fall early. Flowers: in May- June, white, very fragrant and attractive to bees, grouped in pendulous clusters 15-25 cm long. Fruit: sessile legumes, linear, 5-10 cm long. Extremely adaptable to all types of soil but with a preference for light and calcareous and not compact, clay and peaty.
