Quercus rubra BushOrigin: eastern United States. Large deciduous tree, vigorous, with wide, dome-shaped crown with strong side branches, spreading out almost horizontally. The bark is shiny and grey and becomes brown and furrowed with age. Leaves: matt green, 10 to 25cm long, 15 cm wide, borne on small, strong stalks, they have they have 3-5 pointed lobes which become dark red in autumn. Fruit: acorns enclosed in cupules. Quite tolerant as regards type of soil but grows well in deep, well drained soil. Not suitable for calcareous soil.
