Quercus phellos Espalier on tall trunkOrigin: Central and south-eastern United States, where it grows naturally in damp but permeable soils. Semievergreen or evergreen tree in warm or mild climates; deciduous in cold climes. Broad-ovoidal crown; smooth grey bark that flakes off in small flakes. Lanceolate leaves with entire margins, green, 5-15 cm long, very similar to those of the willow; in autumn they turn a lovely orange colour. Flowers: more or less golden catkins, in May. Fruits: spherical glands with diameter of 1-1.5 cm.
