Pterocarya fraxinifolia BushOrigin: Caucasus, Northern Iran. Large, fast growing, deciduous tree with a broad crown formed from strong, upright branches arching at the base. Large, pinnate leaves, made up of 11-25 precocious, pale green lanceolate leaflets, which turn bright yellow in autumn. Flowers: pendulous catkins in April-May, 8-15cm long, followed by winged fruit grouped in racemes of the same length. Very tolerant regarding type of soil but prefers moist soil and is ideal for planting alongside water as it also withstands temporary flooding.
