Green leaves, 6-15cm long, oval-elongate, which turn yellow or amber in autumn. Numerous white flowers, simple, 2.5cm wide, grouped in clusters. The flowers begin to open just before the leaves. Fruit: small, red, edible cherries, sweet-and-sour. It is used a lot as a root-stock for more productive congeners. In Italy it can be found in beech woods and in spring when it is in flower it stands out creating attractive splashes of white. Grows well in clay soil as long as it is well drained.
