Large tree native to Asia Minor, southern Europe, and North Africa with an upright crown and a twisted trunk covered with white bark. Deciduous dark green leaves with a white, hairy underside, 6-12 cm long. Also grows in dry, sandy soils but thrives in fresh, moist ones. Highly salt-tolerant, used alone, in tree rows, or as a windbreak tree.
