Tree native to the Mediterranean region of Europe with an upright trunk and a compact, slightly conical crown. The deciduous leaves are elongated with spiny edges, dark green in color, and 8–12 cm long. The flowers are gathered in hanging racemes, and the fruits are cones formed by overlapping bracts. Hardy, it is resistant to limestone, fires, pollution, and drought, and is used in avenues and city parks.
