Metasequoia glyptostroboides StandardOrigin: China. Deciduous conifer, considered a fossil until 1941 when it was rediscovered in China. From then on, it grew rapidly in popularity, not only in botanic gardens all over the world but also in nurseries and private and public gardens. Distinguishable orangey-brown bark which flakes off. It has a conical habit and in winter without leaves the geometric shape of a triangle is evident. Leaves: very similar to Taxodium, soft, bright green, 1.5-2cm long. In autumn, before they fall, the leaves are bronze coloured. Produces small, round or cylindrical, pendulous cones. Requires soil that is rich in humus, moist but well-drained as it can withstand stagnation, but only if it is temporary.
