Malus floribunda
Malus floribunda, also called Japanese crabapple, is a shrub with a height ranging from 4 to 8 meters. It has medium-sized oval bright green leaves. It has a dense and round crown, which from March to June fills with many star-shaped flowers that have five petals and are gathered in clusters of red, white, or pink. Its spread exceeds 9 meters. The fruit, very distinctive, is a drupe the size of a plum and orange, yellow, or red in color, which appears after flowering and remains attached to the branches for a long time. The fruits have a hard and woody texture and are not pleasant in taste: they are often bitter and unpleasant. However, these fruits are not useless, as they can be used to produce liquors, cider, or to extract pectin, a natural thickener often used to prepare jams.
