Davidia involucrata BushOrigin: China. Alternate leaves wide, green, glabrous and glossy on the underside. Flowers: flowering occurs only after the plant is 8-10 years old. The flowers are purple and violet, appear in May-June and are encircled in two long, white bracts which rise up at the slightest breeze and look like handkerchiefs blowing on the clothes line. Fruit: oval, up to 4cm long, purple when ripe and in China is considered to be edible. The Davidia is hardy and does not have any special requirements as regards type of soil but prefers cool, light soil rich in humus.
