Cupressus sempervirens 'Pyramidalis'
Conifer native to Italy with a columnar and compact crown. Male and female flowers are arranged in yellow strobili at the ends of branches. The fruits, called "coccole," are round, 2-3 cm wide, green when young and gray-brown at maturity (which occurs every two years). Roots are deep when young but become shallow with age, so it needs sheltered locations from the wind but has no specific soil requirements. It resists sea exposure if partially protected, and ideal pruning is light and repeated.
