Corylus avellana BushOrigin: Europe, Asia. Vigorous deciduous shrub, which can also be trained as a small tree. Heart-shaped leaves of 10 cm, with toothed margins. Very showy male flowers in spring, on the still bare branches, in long golden catkins less decorative, the female ones (on the same plant). Fruits: the well-known hazelnuts, edible, ripening from mid- August to mid- November. Hardy, with very few requirements as regards soil, thrives even in chalky soils.
