Shrub or small tree native to China, Japan, and the Island of Java. The deciduous leaves are dark green, oval, and range from 10 to 20 cm in length. It blooms abundantly from August to October with pink buds that conceal white petals, while it fruits with round light blue capsules bordered by dark red calyxes. It grows well even in infertile soils.
