Butia capitata BushOrigin: Brazil, Uruguay. A beautiful palm with a solid trunk topped by a flexuous crown. Evergreen leaves which develop at the top of stalks, 70-100cm long, thorny, dark brown; at first they are upright, hanging down at the tips, pinnate, 1.50-2m, composed of many thin leathery, bluish-grey leaflets. Flowers: pendulous inflorescences, creamy yellow in summer. Fruit: numerous, ovoidal, orangey-yellow with fibrous pulp, tasty, edible. Requires soil which is rich in humus, well drained.
