Native to North America, developed in the Rocky Mountains where it grows up to 3000 meters and sometimes reaches a height of 80 meters. It was brought to Italy in 1850, with a wide conical shape when young that becomes more slender over time, with branches at the base that remain for the plant’s entire life. The needles are bluish-green on both sides (hence the name), the female flowers are yellow while the male ones are yellow with pink shades, and the cones are bluish-purple and purple. It adapts to dry and poor soils and withstands temperature fluctuations.
